The 40,000 in your hospital bill that most health policies do not pay

· Updated 14 Aug 2026 · 4 min read · By Trust Cover · Reviewed by Trust Cover Claims Desk

Gloves, syringes, PPE, administration charges. Individually small, collectively a large uninsured line.

Every hospital bill has a section of items that standard health policies exclude: non-medical consumables. On a surgical admission it is regularly one of the largest uninsured components.

What sits in that list

  • Gloves, masks, PPE kits, sanitiser
  • Syringes, cotton, bandage and dressing items charged separately
  • Administration and documentation charges
  • Attendant comfort items, food for relatives, toiletries

Why it is excluded

These are treated as items of use rather than treatment. The regulator has published a list of items commonly held to be non-payable, and most insurers follow it.

The fix

Many insurers now offer a consumables cover rider, sometimes called a non-medical expense benefit. It is inexpensive relative to what it saves and is worth adding at renewal, particularly for older members and for policies used at private hospitals.

What to do at discharge

  • Ask for the itemised bill, not the summary
  • Query anything charged as a package with no breakup
  • Keep every receipt - some items are reimbursable under a rider even if not under the base policy

Whether an item is payable depends on the wording of your policy and any riders on it.

General information, not advice on a specific policy. Insurance is the subject matter of solicitation.
